Michigan's Mike McCray on Butkus Award watch list

Five Big Ten students are part on this year's Hornung Award preseason watch list.

In other watch list news, Clemson linebacker Kendall Joseph is on that list for the Butkus Award which is named after the former Chicago Bear great.

The award is presented to the most versatile player in college football. The victor and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award Banquet presented by KentuckyOne Health, to be held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville on March 8, 2018.

The 2017 Watch List is comprised of one graduate student, 23 seniors, 19 juniors, and three sophomores who play a total of nine different positions. This time it's the Butkus Award, which is given to the best linebacker in college football.

Alabama's Reuben Foster - a first-round selection of the San Francisco 49ers - won the award previous year.

A fifth MI football player has landed on a preseason watch list. That included 11 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.

In Clemson's run to the national championship season, Wilkins was named a first-team All-American by the AFCA, Football Writers Association and Phil Steele.

Okoronkwo is also in the running for the Bednarik and Nagurski awards, given to the nation's top defensive players.

McCray had an outstanding season for the Wolverines a year ago, starting all 13 games, while racking up a career-high 76 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions, en route to earning All-Big Ten honorable mention.
