Zeliang has majority support, I am convinced, says Nagaland governor

"The news report on governor issuing new directives to postpone the floor test and asking former chief minister TR Zeliang to submit a writ petition to speaker with at least 10 Opposition legislators to move the no-confidence false", a Raj Bhavan spokesman said.

One day after Nagaland chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu nearly dismissed a Raj Bhavan directive to prove his majority in the House by July 15 in the wake of former chief minister TR Zeliang's claim that most legislators were behind him, governor PB Acharya has said that the a floor test was a must and had to be done by Saturday. The need for the floor test arose after former Chief Minister TR Zeliang wrote a letter to the governor pleading to form a government with the support of 41 out of 59 MLAs. The Governor, therefore, requested the chief minister to call for an emergent session of the 12th NLA to prove his majority on the floor of the House as early as possible.

In a sudden political development, the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) Legislature Party along with the NPF Central party leaders after a consultative meeting held yesterday at the Chief Minister's Residential Office and resolved to withdraw the suspension orders of 10 MLAs and MP Lok Sabha, Neiphiu Rio from the party.

"By no stretch of imagination it can be presumed that because of this (bye-election) the Council of Ministers cannot recommend the summoning of a special session of the State Assembly", said the governor in an indignant tone. A press note from the Working President, NPF, Apong Pongener said that the "present crisis is an internal crisis within the NPF party and as such this decision is being made to reiterate the party's stand to bring about true reconciliation and better judgment for the sake of the party and in the larger interest of the Nagas". He further opined that though Shurhozelie was the chief minister, he was yet to become an elected member. He did not elaborate what course of action he would take if the Chief Minister declines.

"You are aware that TR Zeliang has staked claim to form the Government stating that he has the support of the majority of the legislators. Moreover, Zeliang is also the DAN chairman", Acharya said, making things clear that Shurhozelie had no option left but to quit.

Meanwhile, the 41 NPF and Independent MLAs who have been camping in a resort in Kaziranga National Park could not return to Kohima on Thursday in view of the unprecedented floods that had inundated more than 75 per cent of the Park area.
