The six-year-old, whose fearless battle with cancer captured hearts around the world, was a mascot for Sunderland FC and became best friends with star player Jermain Defoe.

Defoe left a pre-season training camp in Spain with his new club Bournemouth so he can attend the service in Blackhall, County Durham.

Friends and relatives walked behind dressed in superhero costumes and football shirts with "Bradley" and the number six printed on the back.

There's only one Bradley Lowery.

Balloons were released as the cortege passed and a round of applause broke out.

They said the service would be played on speakers outside the church for people who were not able to fit inside.

Former Sunderland FC manager David Moyes was also among the congregation.

The loveable Sunderland fan sadly lost his long battle with cancer last Friday, and his close friend Jermain Defoe was among those attending the funeral.

Bradley, who had a rare form of childhood cancer, died a week ago at his home.

Bradley led out England for the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley in March and was a special guest at the Grand National.

The young Sunderland fan struck up a close friendship with star striker Jermain Defoe after he was diagnosed with the illness.

His death prompted tributes from thousands of people from across the world.

A statement from the twitter account @Bradleysfight said the funeral was "open to everyone who would like to come and celebrate Bradley's life and pay their respects to show him how much he was loved".

The theme for the funeral was "Cancer has no colours" and mourners duly adorned a variety of football shirts and bright wear.
