Presidential Election 2017: Electors Are Using These Special Ink Pens to Cast Their Votes Today

On the day when lawmakers voted to elect India's next President, Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the National Democratic Alliance's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind will win with a "comfortable" margin.

All NDA members were asked to vote in the presidential election and not waste their votes.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said she is happy that both the presidential candidates were Dalits. "All rumours are baseless and should be ignored", he added.

Voting began on Monday at 10:00 a.m. local time and will end at 5:00 p.m. local time, with some 4,900 legislators nationwide taking part.

The results of the poll are expected to be announced on 20 July. However, AAP plans to abstain as its leader H.S. Phoolka, who has handled several 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases which some Congress leaders are implicated in, has said he can not vote for the Congress candidate.

All the eligible MLAs and MPs have been casting their votes for the Presidential elections.

The following year a photographed handshake between President Xi and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe faced similar treatment. Posts comparing Chinese president Xi Jinping to the cartoon bear - a longstanding joke in China - were also taken down.

BJP's President Amit Shah and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast their votes at the Parliament house. Since the election is through a secret ballot, the parties can not issue a whip to their members to vote for a particular candidate.

Kovind, 72, who is from the low-caste Dalit community, is facing Meira Kumar, a former parliament speaker and a fellow-Dalit backed by the opposition Congress party.

Zaidi had also pointed out that political parties can not issue any whip to their MPs and MLAs in the matter of voting.

The polling is being to choose the successor of incumbent Pranab Mukherjee, who demits office on July 25. Some of the MLAs also raised the issue of differences between the organisational and legislative wings in the party and drew attention of the AICC observer to the statements made by former minister Suresh Kumar Routray against them. "So it is very important that we protect and preserve it", said Kumar.

"The forces which are present should be decimated". The victor can be announced earlier based on the parties' support.

"The party has taken a stand and we are making all possible efforts to ensure Meira Kumar wins", he said.
