Quintana and Cubs' rotation gets a 'fresh start' after White Sox trade

Chicago Cubs news: Jose Quintana to make team debut on Sunday vs. Orioles

The White Sox didn't budge on asking for a hefty package of players for Quintana, and they had their demands met by the reigning World Champions.

This week's Cubs-White Sox blockbuster could be one that works out well for both teams, but there's no doubt that it was a coup for Sox general manager Rick Hahn, who traded a starter having a decidedly so-so season for the Cubs' top two prospects in Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease. Over the off-season they acquired numerous top prospects in trades with the most notable being Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech from Boston in the Chris Sale trade, as well as Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez from the Nationals in the Adam Eaton deal. With High-A Myrtle Beach this year, he hit.271/.351/.490 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 174 plate appearances. King Felix has largely struggled since returning from injury, but he pitched six scoreless innings against the Athletics in his last start before the break.

The Chicago Cubs made a bold trade to land Jose Quintana on Thursday, but they are reportedly still be looking to land Sonny Gray.

If we've learned nothing else, it's that Major League Baseball championship hangovers are real.

While the Cubs needed starting pitching, they did not want a rental. But even with him, the Cubs remain at least one starter - and probably two - from being a top-flight contender in 2018 and beyond.

New Hampshire may see lovely northern lights show Sunday night
If the sky is clear enough and other factors are in place, there's a chance all of MI could get a view of the Northern Lights. The particles interact with molecules of atmospheric gases to cause the famed glowing red and green colors of the aurora.

Though at first glance his 4-8 record and 4.49 record may seem alarming, it is not as bad as it seems. The best news for the Cubs though is that Quintana has a 2.51 career ERA at Wrigley Field. The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his past five starts entering the series opener with NY. He has a career 3.51 ERA - all achieved in the hitter-friendly American League. He's 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA on the season, but has turned things around more recently, which obviously was enough for the Cubs to believe in his bounce back.

Mike Montgomery (1-6, 3.75 ERA) began starting for the Cubs in early June and has been fairly effective. "But moving a player like Quintana gives you the opportunity to add talent like this". "As we've discussed with many of you frequently over the years, we've been trying to add controllable, talented pitching to this core that we have".

The Cubs haven't been great, but Quintana hasn't been stellar as well.

Though many are skeptical, Theo and the staff knows he can help them win now while being able to have him under control until 2020. It's neat to pitch against these guys, guys I've played with for a long time.

The trade between the two teams in 1992, however, was one to remember: The White Sox traded Sammy Sosa and Ken Patterson to the Cubs for former MVP and All-Star George Bell.
