Red Sox end Pablo Sandoval's time in Boston

The Red Sox designated Pablo Sandoval for assignment on Friday, bringing an end to his time in Boston and punctuating one of the worst free agent deals in Major League Baseball history. He was coming off a stellar postseason and a third World Series title with the San Francisco Giants and was pursued aggressively by both the Giants and the San Diego Padres. He's only about halfway through his deal, so the dead money (nearly $50 million) will be a huge price to pay for the Red Sox. "I need a new challenge", he said during a news conference at Fenway Park in November before frolicking in front of the snow-covered field with a person in a panda suit.

Evan Drellich of CSNNE.com reports that the Red Sox have promoted third base prospect Rafael Devers to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Ex-Soviet agent at meeting between Trump Jr., Russian lawyer
Trump Jr. said the meeting "really went nowhere" and that he never told his father about it because there was "nothing to tell". Intelligence committee Chairman Richard Burr would not say Thursday when he wanted to speak with Kushner or Trump Jr.

Unless another team claims Sandoval off waivers, the Red Sox will have to pay him for the remaining 2-1/2 years on the contract.

He appeared in only three games a season ago after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. But that lasted just three weeks before a knee injury landed him on the disabled list for 32 games. During that time, the Red Sox got surprisingly strong performances at third base from light-hitting Deven Marrero and Double-A call-up Tzu-Wei Lin.
