"We gave time for the new administration to examine this disgusting legacy and begin to build the bilateral relationship on the basis of mutual respect", Ms. Zakharova said.

The White House is considering the possibility of returning Russian diplomatic property in the United States to Russia to give a chance to cooperation between Moscow and Washington, Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to US President Donald Trump said Thursday.

The warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, reflects rising frustration in Moscow over the Trump administration's refusal to hand back two Russian diplomatic compounds which were seized at the same time as some of Russia's diplomats were sent home previous year.

"The seized compounds have not been returned yet", Ms. Zakharova said, as translated by TASS, a state-owned newswire.

NAN reports that in December 2016, former U.S. President Barack Obama's administration approved a sanctions package against Russian Federation due to its alleged interference in the U.S. elections. "As for the measures - the number of personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow significantly exceeds the number of our personnel working in Washington".

"Washington not only did not rescind the decision to expel our employees, but also refuses to issue visas to those who must travel as replacements", Zakharova said. "One of our options, apart from a tit-for-tat expulsion of Americans, would be to even out the numbers". Russian diplomats have said the compounds are treated as vacation homes, but US officials claimed they were also used by Moscow for intelligence-related purposes.

Any U.S. preconditions for the return of its diplomatic property seized by the United States ran contrary to global law, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
