Then adding: "Romero used genre to confront racism 50 years ago".

Night of the Living Dead director George Romero passed away at the age of 77 surrounded by his family in his home. He was actually in the middle of writing another sequel entitled "George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead" which he described as "The Fast and the Furious with zombies".

His non-zombie films of that period gained more attention, including "Knightridgers" about jousters who re-enact tournaments on motorcycles and the anthology "Creepshow" written by Stephen King.

Romero's films were subversive, satirical, and sharply aware of the political climate he lived in. He will certainly be missed.

In 1978, Romero made another cult classic movie in the zombie genre, Dawn of the Dead and it earned over $55 million worldwide.

Auto lands on roof of house
Serious damage appears to have been done to the home, with one of the front walls and part of the roof caved in. The driver, who's not being identified at this time, was taken to Barnes Jewish hospital in critical condition.

The US-born director died following a "brief, but aggressive battle with lung cancer", according to his manager Chris Roe. Robert Kirkman, the mastermind behind The Walking Dead, claims that seeing the Living Dead trilogy was his biggest guiding light, though Romero has been dismissive of TWD in return, calling it "a soap opera with a zombie occasionally".

He exec produced and updated his own screenplay for Tom Savini's 1990 remake of "Night of the Living Dead".

Mr Romero's movies were about much more than just shuffling zombies: they took on racism, mall culture, class divides and militarism.

He told the Associated Press in 2008 the zombies could represent anything and that "the stories are about how people fail to respond in the proper way". "I feel this is my way of being able to express myself". His father was a Cuban national, while his mother was Lithuanian-American. At the time of his passing he was with his wife Suzanne Desrocher Romero and daughter Tina Romero. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and most of his films are set in/around the Pittsburgh area.
