After the massive success of live-action remakes like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, it was a no-brainer for Disney to next tackle one of their most beloved films to date - 1994 classic The Lion King. This also reunites him with Disney after previously working together on Real Steel, but this will be a much bigger project. He made a decision to bring some of the footage with him and debuted it to the crowd at D23. Favreau was also the genius behind the majorly successful The Jungle Book remake previous year.

The scene saw rhinos, zebra, elephants and other animals gather around a huge rock where Rafiki presents the new baby Simba to the world. If they are lying and this really is true, Jackman would be joining Donald Glover as Simba, Billy Eichner as Timon, Seth Rogen as Pumba, and newly announced John Oliver as Zazu.

Jackman certainly has the ferocity to play Scar, and will bring his many talents to the character. James Earl Jones will also return to voice Mufasa. This means it's just about 100% likely that Jackman won't be involved with The Lion King at all.

Hugh Jackman might be done playing Wolverine, with the X-Man taking his last stand in this year's Logan. Not only that, Jackman is an accomplished singer and has a soft spot for musicals - so signing on to The Lion King, which will no doubt feature some of the music from the original, seems right up his alley. If Jackman and Beyonce both end up in the film, it would be one of the best ensemble casts Disney has ever compiled. Disney has yet to confirm this just yet, but with D23 now underway, we expect them to do so quite soon.

The Lion King hits cinemas across the globe on July 19, 2019. Note: Disney has not stated when and if it will release this first look at the film.
