UK surgeon finds 27 missing contact lenses in woman's eye

Here's a reminder to take your contacts out and schedule regular eye appointments: Doctors at a British hospital found 27 old contact lenses in the eye of a woman who was scheduled for cataract surgery, according to Optometry Today. When she and her team went in to begin work, they discovered a bluish mass that was "like nothing they'd ever seen before" - and it ended up being 17 contact lenses, stuck together in the patient's eye.

Morjaria said she hopes the incident will raise awareness among those who wear contact lenses to get an eye exam more frequently, and in person. On examining her eyes with a microscope, they discovered 10 more contact lenses in her eye.

Rupal Morjaria, specialist trainee ophthalmologist, said, "She was quite shocked".

'It was such a large mass. Part of their surprise, she said, was because the patient hadn't complained of any irritation.

After this insane discovery, the woman's cataract surgery was postponed as the "risk of developing endophthalmitis, inflammation of the interior of the eye, was increased".

"Because she had harboured these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated, she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva", explained Morjaria.

The case occurred last November but it is now being reported in the British Medical Journal.

Contact lenses, when kept in the eyes for too long or placed without cleaning, are prone to infections and other conditions. She had not reported any symptoms that could be linked to the missing lenses. Said Dr. Rupal Morjaria It important to take out the lenses and let the eyes breathe.

Both optometrists and ophthalmologists stressed the importance of having regular check-ups with professionals.

"Contact lenses are used all the time, but if they are not appropriately monitored we see people with serious eye infections that can cause them to lose their sight".
