Betty Shelby, cop who fatally shot Terence Crutcher, resigns from Tulsa police department

An Oklahoma police officer acquitted of manslaughter in the shooting death of a man in Tulsa is resigning.

Protesters march towards Tulsa City Hall during a peaceful protest honoring Terence Crutcher who was shot and killed by Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. September 2016. I pray for healing for his family.

Betty Shelby was allowed to return to active duty and landed a cushy desk job after being acquitted in May of manslaughter. Shelby had been working in an administrative role since May 19, two days after the manslaughter acquittal that sent shockwaves throughout communities of color, reports CBS News.

Tulsa police spokesman Sgt. Shane Tuell said it's not clear whether the police chief has received Shelby's letter, adding that he couldn't comment until that document is in hand.

Ms Shelby's lawyer, Shannon McMurray, said she not sure what the 43-year-old will do next. She doesn't know what Shelby plans to do next. McMurray says her client is not cut out for a desk job. Shelby said she feared for her life when Crutcher, a black man who was unarmed, didn't follow her orders and she thought he reached into his stalled SUV for a gun.

Contempt proceedings against Vijay Mallya to proceed only in his presence
Other than Mallya, there are eight more people indicted in the 57-page long charge sheet for their alleged roles in the case. The affidavit further stated that the extradition process is "already under progress in the United Kingdom courts".

Crutcher was captured on surveillance camera with his hands in the air.

The jury foreman's letter, which was entered into the court record, said that while the jury agreed that using force in the situation she was placed in was warranted, they believed that using a taser on Crutcher 'could have saved his life'. The resignation will take effect on August 3.

Race relations in Tulsa have been strained for more than 100 years. Crutcher's relatives filed a $75,000 wrongful death lawsuit in June, seeking mandatory training for cops on how to manage suspects with mental health or substance abuse issues.

Last week, a jury deadlocked for the third time in less than a year and forced a mistrial in the murder case of a white former Tulsa officer accused of killing his daughter's black boyfriend.
