Turkey extends state of emergency by further three months

OIC backs Turkey on 1st coup anniversary

The Turkish parliament voted Monday to extend a state of emergency by three months, almost a year after it was implemented in the wake of a failed coup attempt.

"First of all we will chop off the heads of those traitors", Erdogan said as he reaffirmed previous comments to sign any bill passed restoring capital punishment.

Under emergency rule, the government can bypass parliament and enact new laws, in addition to limiting or suspending pre-existing rights and freedoms.

The government was using the commemorations for the anniversary of the failed July 15 2016 coup to "write a fabricated history", said Bulent Tezcan, the spokesman of the Republican People's Party (CHP).

It followed weekend ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the abortive coup in which about 250 people were killed and almost 2,200 more injured.

Afghanistan becomes more deadly for civilians
The UN's special envoy to Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto said the human cost of the conflict remains "far too high". It also recommended ongoing support from global military forces to support and train the Afghan national army.

During the same speech, Erdogan denied opposition claims that the government had foreknowledge of the coup, calling them "shameless" and "immoral".

President Erdogan claims the coup was led by a cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who has been living in self-imposed exile in the United States for almost two decades.

The mass dismissal came one day after Turkish police detained a prominent film director who made a controversial movie showing Erdogan under gunpoint in a bloody coup d'etat. All public officers are accused of links to the movement of the Philadelphia-based Sunni cleric, Fethullah Gulen, which is referred to by Turkish authorities as FETÖ (Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organization).

The extension will take effect from Wednesday at 01:00 a.m. (2200 GMT, Tuesday), state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
