UAE Behind Qatar Media Hacking: US Intelligence

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was behind a series of hacks that sparked regional discord and isolated Qatar from its neighbors, according to a media report Sunday, quoted by Anadolu Agency.

The Washington Post claims to have learned this from USA intelligence officials, who had acquired information supposedly showing UAE officials meeting to plan the hack.

Abu Dhabi is said to have orchestrated the hack to post inflammatory quotes falsely attributed to Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, the Washington Post reports.

Qatar said its emir had never given the speech, and that the story had been planted electronically, but its allies were outraged, and one of the most serious feuds in years between Western-aligned Gulf states began.

Among other things, they've always been irate over Qatar's ties to militant and terrorist Islamist groups in the Mideast and its friendly relations with Iran - Saudi Arabia's chief rival in the region.

Later, it blamed the UAE for the planted story - an allegation backed up by the USA intelligence sources quoted in the Washington Post on Sunday. Henderson believes that it could be an attempt by some operators in the Trump administration to diminish the strength of the Saudi/UAE position in negotiations with Qatar over ending the boycott.

Gargash told the BBC that Qatar's denial had been contradicted by its agreement to review a list of 59 individuals and 12 organisations who the UAE has accused of supporting terrorism and wants arrested or expelled. The President deserves all the embarassment he can get (his response to the Qatar crisis is incoherent) but this is not the way to achieve the right policy result. What effect, if any, did this revelation have on Trump's credulous support for the campaign? Tillerson left the Middle East after he was unable to achieve a resolution in talks with leaders in the region.

Anwar Gargash, UAE state minister for foreign affairs, said on Monday that a report in the Washington Post newspaper suggesting that the United Arab Emirates arranged for the hacking, is "not true". Qatar vehemently denies all the allegations against it.

U.S. intelligence agencies declined to comment on the Post's article, but the UAE's ambassador insisted that it "had no role whatsoever in the alleged hacking".

Proof points and key messages on Qatar's funding and support of terrorism and extremism will be brought to the limelight at a seminar in Brussels.

In a speech due to be delivered in London on Monday, the United Arab Emirates foreign minister, Anwar Gargash, will warn: "You can not be part of a regional organisation dedicated to strengthening mutual security and furthering mutual interests, and at the same time undermine that security and harm those interests".

Over the past few months, emails of the UAE ambassador have been leaked to the media by a group called "GlobalLeaks".

They were quickly seized on by news organisations outside Qatar, but Doha said they were false.
