UAE denies Washington Post report it orchestrated Qatar hack

Qatar says the United Arab Emirates' alleged hacking of its government websites is a violation of worldwide law.

The Post said officials became aware of the UAE's role in the hack after newly analyzed information gathered by members of the USA intelligence community revealed senior members of UAE's government discussed the plans and how to implement the attack. "We either reach an agreement and Qatar's behaviour changes, or Qatar makes its own bed and they can move on and we can move with a new relationship". Funding, supporting, and enabling extremists from the Taliban to Hamas and Gadhafi. "Inciting violence, encouraging radicalization, and undermining the stability of its neighbors", the statement said.

During the attack, hackers were able to publish fake news stories attributed to Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim in late May, quoted Tamim as appearing friendly to Iran by referring to it as an "Islamic power".

Since June 5, Qatar has been under a land, sea and air blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain and Yemen, who accuse Doha of supporting terrorism.

He also reiterated that the UAE and five other Arab nations had not written to Federation Internationale de Football Association to demand that Qatar be stripped of the right to host the 2022 World Cup.

The false remarks by Emir Al Thani were quickly picked up and circulated by other Gulf news outlets, even after Qatar issued a statement clarifying the story was fabricated.

Al Jazeera's Heidi Zhou-Castro, reporting from Washington, DC, said this is new information and the US Department of State has yet to officially respond. The Post did not identify the intelligence officials it spoke to for the report.

The United Arab Emirates was not responsible for an alleged hack of Qatari websites which helped spark a month-long diplomatic rift with Doha, the UAE's foreign minister said on Monday.

"These are certainly developments that will be analysed and will have a major role to play in negotiations coming up", she said.

The hacks took place almost two weeks earlier on May 24, one day after senior Emirati officials allegedly discussed the plan.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Thursday returned to the United States from his shuttle diplomacy in the Gulf region to try to resolve the dispute. But his efforts, and those of European states, have so far been unsuccessful.

They say Qatar has supported many radical groups. His visit had yielded little except for a bilateral agreement between the USA and Qatar to fight "terrorism".
