Emergency crews rushed to the scene at about 1.30pm local time, with USA media reporting the vehicle struck a police auto before it crashed into a barrier near the Library of Congress.

The driver suffered minor injuries.

The suspect, who hasn't been publicly named by police, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon-vehicle, assaulting a police officer, aggravated reckless driving, and no valid permit.

The incident began when a vehicle being driven erratically came close to hitting the cruiser parked at its post along Independence Avenue.

Police then carried out a "controlled explosion" on the suspicious vehicle while investigating - with a loud bang heard throughout Capitol Hill.

Jodie Whittaker Is Actually The SECOND Female Doctor Who
35-year-old actress Jodie Whittaker will be taking over from the outgoing Peter Capaldi, who exits the show this Christmas. She is the first woman to sign on as the lead in the show, which has been running for 54 years.

No one was injured as the shots were fired during the arrest, police said.

The conditions of those who were injured were not known. Pennsylvania Avenue SE is closed between Third Street and Second Street.

Police have confirmed the incident is "criminal" in nature and not believed to have any terror links. They were seen in a black Toyota sport-utility vehicle on D Street.

The man was found at about 4:40 a.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of 60th Avenue, Prince George's County police said. The Capitol Police officer was transported to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released, said police spokeswoman Eva Malecki in an email to WTOP.
