Crews look for survivors of plane crash near Flagler, St. Johns County line

Several law enforcement and government agencies are searching for survivors from a small plane crash near the St. Johns-Flagler county line Friday.

The plane's wreckage was found by helicopter at about noon east of the Matanzas River near the River to Sea Preserve, according to Flagler County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Strobridge.

The FAA confirms to First Coast News that it lost contact with a Piper PA44 aircraft approximately 22 miles north of Ormond Beach around 11 p.m. Thursday.

"We don't know how many occupants are in the plane still", Strobridge said, adding that the fuselage was upside down and "pancaked into the ground".

The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed they believe two people were on board the plane and launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter at 2:15 a.m.to search for survivors. A witness told investigators the plane was "flying low with an engine sputtering".
