Abdominal strain sees Alexis Sanchez sidelined for Arsenal’s opening two matches

Arsene Wenger has told SFR Sport that Arsenal have the "firm intention" of not selling Alexis Sanchez this summer but he is "not super optimistic" of keeping him beyond this season.

With less than 20 days left in the transfer season, it's unlikely Arsenal will choose to sell #Alexis Sanchez unless he wants to leave the club.

Sanchez has an abdominal strain and Wenger says he is likely to be "out for a while", ruling him out for the first two games against Leicester City this Friday and Stoke next week.

Fans should bear in mind that Alexis scored 24 goals in the league last season, and as such, he has attracted interest from both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

Wenger has conceded that Sanchez is not willing to prolong his stay at the Emirates meaning he is on course to walk away for free in a year's' time when he will be 29.

One person on Twitter pointed out that "BBC said it was looking into the matter, saying in a statement it was "establishing the facts".

Wenger said Sanchez would not have started against Leicester even if he wasn't injured. He has a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training, before he came to Wembley. They are on (Kylian) Mbappe's case, that's what I read in the papers. "We have all the other players prepared in preseason and they are all ready". 'I have sympathy for him.

Arsenal rejected a £25m bid from Chelsea for Oxlade-Chamberlain this week, but Stamford Bridge boss Antonio Conte is determined to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline.

Wenger would rather add players than lose them at this time due to activities from rivals. "He is on the way up and he will continue to move up because that potential is there", Wenger said. "I can take a gamble on one, maybe maximum two", Wenger said.

"He is today very conscious of his qualities as well, which he was not always, and I personally believe he will be a very great player".

"I will focus more on the players who had the right number of competitive minutes in recent weeks".
