Amateur submarine inventor whose craft sank off Denmark is arrested on suspicion of KILLING journalist who vanished after boarding the vessel

The Danish owner of a homemade submarine that sank south of Copenhagen has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a Swedish journalist who was a passenger on the vessel.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) submarine sank off Denmark's eastern coast.

Danish media said Mr Madsen had been charged with negligent manslaughter and would be detained for 24 days, following his court appearance on Saturday.

Peter Madsen (below) denies killing the Swedish woman, saying he last saw her when he dropped her off on the tip of an island in Copenhagen late on Thursday.

Madsen's defence lawyer, Bettina Hald Engmark, said her client maintains his innocence and is "willing to cooperate".

"Whether the woman was on board the submarine at the time of her disappearance is unclear", Danish police said without naming her.

Ms Wall's family told the Associated Press that "it is with great dismay that we received the news that Kim went missing during an assignment in Denmark".

Kim Wall, 30, a NY and Beijing-based journalist, hasn't been seen since Madsen's40-ton, almost 60-foot-long submarine sank off Denmark's eastern coast Friday.

An unidentified woman stands in the tower of the private submarine "UC3 Nautilus" pictured in Copenhagen Harbor, Denmark August 11, 2017.

The Sweden-born freelance journalist studied at the Sorbonne university in Paris, the London School of Economics and at Columbia University in NY, where she graduated with a master's degree in journalism in 2013.

Madsen said "a minor problem with a ballast tank turned into a major issue" that ultimately caused the submarine to sink.

"(He) came up again and stayed in the tower until water came into it", before swimming to a nearby boat as the submarine sank. He claims he dropped the woman off at Refshaleøen three hours later.

A salvage vessel, the Vina, was Saturday working on raising the submarine, which was seven metres under water off Copenhagen's south island of Dragoer.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) UC3 Nautilus sank.

"It took about 30 seconds for Nautilus to sink, and I couldn't close any hatches or anything", Madsen said.

The Navy said the sub was seen sailing, but then sank shortly afterwards.
