US wants India to make North Korea understand the situation

CIA Director Mike Pompeo said Pyongyang was moving at an "ever-alarming rate" with its weapons programme and another missile test would not be surprising.

"I will not be surprised that they will do another missile test".

US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster echoed the tenor of Pompeo's remarks, saying the threat posed by North Korea is "coming to a head", but adding in an interview on ABC, "we're not closer to war than a week ago".

"Each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons text, they develop expertise, they expend the envelope".

Donald Trump in particular has promised "fire and anger" at North Korea.

Meanwhile, top USA military officer General Joseph Dunford is in Asia and is expected to meet with leaders in South Korea, Japan and China.

Despite the increased tensions and the bellicose rhetoric from Trump and Kim, Pompeo said there was "nothing imminent" for people to worry about and that he had seen "no intelligence" that would indicate the two nations were on the cusp of nuclear war.

Mr Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious people should be over the escalating tensions.

Following Trump's initial threat, North Korea threatened to target the tiny Pacific island of Guam, a USA territory that is home to large US air and naval bases.

The top USA military officer, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, is traveling in Asia and expected to meet with leaders in South Korea, Japan and China.

"Trump is driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war, making such outcries as 'the USA will not rule out a war against the DPRK (North Korea),'" KCNA said.

Referring to Kim, President Trump added: "If he utters one threat ... or if he does anything with respect to Guam or any place else that's an American territory or an American ally, he will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast".

North Korea has been especially provocative in recent months, testing a series of new short-, medium-, intermediate-, and long-range missiles.

Trump warned last week that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury" if it continued to threaten his country.

The contacts are being held regularly between Joseph Yun, the US envoy for North Korea policy, and Pak Song Il, a senior North Korean diplomat at Pyongyang's United Nations mission, according to USA officials and others briefed on the process cited by the AP.

In response, Mr Trump said North Korea should expect "big, big trouble" if anything happened to Guam.
