Google wrestles with aftermath from controversial memo

It wasn't until the memo went viral inside Google and was leaked externally last weekend that Google chose to take action, he said.

"If Google continues to ignore the very real issues raised by its diversity policies and corporate culture, it will be walking blind into the future-unable to meet the needs of its remarkable employees and sure to disappoint its billions of users", Damore wrote.

According to an op-ed titled "Why I was sacked by Google" in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, James Damore, who was sacked for writing a 10-page anti-diversity memo, said: "Google is a particularly intense echo chamber because it is in the middle of Silicon Valley and is so life-encompassing as a place to work".

Damore disagrees with how the company reacted to his post, claiming that he only meant to say men and women differ due to biological reasons and that is why there are not so many female representatives in leadership positions and in the tech industry.

Internet giant Google has fired the male engineer at the centre of an uproar in Silicon Valley over the past week after he authored an internal memo asserting there are biological causes behind gender inequality in the tech industry.

As expected, the points mentioned in the manifesto did not go down too well with a lot of Google employees. This past January, in its last month of office, the Obama DoL followed up with a lawsuit alleging that Google had not been forthcoming enough in providing employee information in response to the review, and asking a court to order it to comply.

"We had hoped to have a frank, open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward", Pichai said in a memo to employees on Thursday. "But our Dory questions appeared externally this afternoon, and on some websites Googlers are now being named personally", Pichai said in an email to staff.

North Korea's military is considering a plan to launch a missile strike on a USA territory it says poses a threat. Tensions between the US and North Korea have risen to their highest point of Trump's presidency in recent days.

"Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and anxious they may be "outed" publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall", Pichai told employees, explaining his decision to cancel the all-hands meeting. Non-union or "at will" employees, such as most tech workers, can be fired in the United States for a wide array of reasons that have nothing to do with performance.

Damore has emerged as a hero of conservative media.

Several conservative activists have criticized Damore's firing, and some groups have called for a Google boycott.

Damore's Twitter account has nearly 60,000 followers despite starting days ago. The engineer has claimed he had a right to voice concerns over workplace conditions and filed a labor relations board complaint prior to being fired.

Google is now defending itself from a lawsuit from the US Department of Labour which is alleging that the company systematically discriminates against women.

He distributed the "memo" widely inside the company. "What is leadership doing to ensure Googlers like me feel invited and accepted, not just tolerated or safe from angry mobs?"
