It was not immediately clear how many people were travelling in the buses, Kadam said.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday offered condolence to the families of the deceased in the Mandi landslide and requested the Himachal Pradesh Government to provide every possible aid.

Commenting on the incident, Mandi deputy commissioner Sandeep Kadam said the possibility of more deaths could not be ruled out.

"Around 50 people are feared to have been washed away in the landslide", Himachal Pradesh's Transport Minister G.S. Bali told the media.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh tweeted he is on his way to the accident site, adding the NDRF has been called in.
