Giving the stats on previous year deaths at the BRD college, Singh had said, "The paediatric deaths which took place are in August are- 567 in 2014 (19 per day), 668 in 2015 (22 per day) and 587 in 2016 (19.5 per day)".

Indian media said 30 children died on Thursday and Friday after oxygen supply was disrupted in wards housing the sick, allegedly because the suppliers' bills were not paid.

The BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur did not specify the cause of death, but said 34 of babies who died were at the neo-natal intensive care unit, while 12 died because of encephalitis. A probe committee has been formed under the leadership of the Chief Secretary to investigate the matter.

The former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav hit out at Yogi government over Gorakhpur Hospital Tragedy and have demanded immediate action against the culprits.

Opposition Congress Party state chief Raj Babbar said that the horrific incident shows the "insensitivity of the state government".

Most of the deaths were of children admitted to the neonatal and encephalitis wards.

Despite calling the disruption of oxygen as a major lapse, the UP government maintained that none of the deaths were caused due to shortage of oxygen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deeply saddened over the Gorakhpur Baba Raghav Das Medical College tragedy that has claimed 64 lives so far, said MoS Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel on Saturday with the PMO also tweeting about the incident.

By the morning, when children had started gasping for breath, Khan instructed his junior doctors to pump oxygen with Ambu bags (small pumps used manually to aid breathing). 30 kids' had demised in the first 48 hrs.

Taking a swipe at the Uttar Pradesh health minister, the Congress leader tweeted, "UP Health Minister only seeks votes in Lal Bahadur Shastri ji's name -he doesn't follow Shastri ji's high morals in politics..."

"The government is responsible for the deaths of these children", he said.

Blaming the principal for delay in payment to the gas supplier, he said: 'I have been told that the principal left soon after the (August 9) meeting without informing the authorities and has been found prima facie reponsible'. "Those responsible will not be spared", said State Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh who has been directed by Adityanath to look into the matter. "For this objective the central government will release Rs 85 crore", said Nadda.
