Virginia governor to white nationalists: 'Go home ... Shame on you'

Part of what made the case become a federal one was that the chief suspect, 20-year-old James Alex Fields, Jr, crossed state lines, travelling from OH to Virginia.

The driver was later identified by police as James Fields, 20, of Ohio.

A Virginia State Police helicopter crashed Saturday in Albermale County, Virginia, near the city of Charlottesville, where a violent white nationalist rally was taking place.

"Hate came to our town today in a way that we had feared but we had never really let ourselves imagine would", Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones said at a press conference. A University of Virginia Medical Center spokesperson told CNN that 19 people were injured in total, and five of them are in critical condition as of Sunday.

In some responses, politicians called on President Trump to make a more direct statement against white nationalism after he criticized what he said was "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides". "The First Amendment protects the rights of all Americans to speak their minds peaceably, but violence, brutality, and murder have no place in a civilized society".

Troopers identified as two who died in helicopter crash linked to rally
The white nationalist rally was declared an unlawful assembly after the group were initially granted a permit to hold the event. On Saturday afternoon, a Virginia State Police helicopter assisting in monitoring the protests crashed in Albermarle County.

In Oakland, California, a flier for the solidarity event circulated on social media reads, "Charlottesville, We Got Your Back" and "Bay Area United Against White Supremacy". Authorities confirmed to CBS News at least four people were hurt from the crash, suffering from injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. The three men are facing various charges, including assault and carrying a concealed weapon. The group, which is believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalists in a decade, were protesting plans to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Addressing reporters, Trump refused to name white supremacists or any specific group, blaming the violence "on many sides". He's calling for a "swift restoration of law and order".

The Charlottesville government said late on Saturday that over 30 individuals had also been injured during the unrest.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio called on Donald Trump to label the violence as a "terror attack".

"Very important for the nation to hear @potus describe events in #Charlottesville for what they are, a terror attack by #whitesupremacists", Sen.
